Week 4: Map of Digital Spaces
My Personal Map of Digital Spaces
My Internet Map:
Here is my personal map of digital spaces (aka the internet). In order to create this map, I looked at my phone apps and saved webpages to see what things I used/visited most frequently. I made a list of everything on paper and then I found the icons for all the apps/sites. I then placed them where I believed they should go based on whether I just visit them/use less or live in them/use more. I also made the icons bigger based on the amount of time I use them overall verse others on the map. I also added texting into my digital space. I know that it is more like calling and not really an internet thing...but I used it so much that I figured I would include it to show myself that I need to see people more and text less!
Anyways, I will just go over some main points of my digital space map! Most of the personal spaces that I use a lot are social media, but I will say that I limit myself to only 2 because there are so many and I just don't see the point of having 6 different social medias. The ones I use less frequently are tech-savvy tools like Google home, Fitbit and Samsung pay that really just make live easier and just aren't used like crazy but are useful! I have Google docs in my personal space because I do use it for wedding reasons and writing personal documents occasionally, but I use it more frequently for teaching, coaching and grad school and thus why I also put a much larger icon in the personal, resident section.
I put a lot of spaces in between personal and professional because I used them for both reasons pretty equally. I use Amazon to order personal and professional items. I use YouTube to watch video and I also post how to videos for my students on Google Classroom and I also have a huge separate icon in the personal, resident section because I listen to music off of YouTube quite frequently! Google search, calendar, keep and gmail are all in between personal and professional because I use all of them both ways the same amount, but I put them in the resident section because I use them daily verse YouTube and Amazon for the same reasons.
Lastly in the strictly professional sections, I put all the spaces I use for either school, coaching or grad school. On the visitor side, I have ALEKS, PearDeck, Desmos, ConnectED and Google Slides because I use them less frequently in my math classroom but they are used and used about the same amount of time which is why all the icons are similar size. I also have the remind app there which I use for coaching during season and that's it and also Blogger because I use it for grad school and that's it so far. I put Google Classroom in between because I use it every day, but all I do is post the daily agenda and sometime videos for students to watch. I think I can work on using more of it's features in the future. I put infinite campus and google docs in the professional, resident section and they are pretty big icons because I use them all day, everyday at work.

Hi Briana, I love that idea about having students do a similar activity. I know my high school kids would be all about the social media! At least I think they would, maybe I'd be surprised...I am also like you in that I want to incorporate more worthwhile apps/sites but I struggle with finding the time. I learn about something, and a new thing comes along. I am terrible this way, the newest, shiniest site that I hear teachers talk about attracts me and I'm off, never really using it right or religiously so that kids can get super comfortable with it. I think you have a lot of great sites for your math students! Not sure what Desmos is but I know the other ones. Thanks for sharing,

I second Carol's comment about having students do this activity- great idea! Only I would leave in the word "professional". As full time students school *is* their profession- so let's get them in the habit of thinking that way. I never even thought to add my Fitbit...now I need to change my map!
ReplyDeleteGoogle Keep! Everyone has included at least one app/service on their map that I use all the time but neglected to include. In your case, it's Keep. Super handy. A great idea to mine your phone and favorites to get a sense of what you use most. I'm with you. This is an activity that I will use with the teachers & principals I coach and then have them consider how to do such an activity with their students. Not only would it be useful for the kids to see where they spend their time and reflect on it, but useful too for teachers to see where kids spend their time and leverage that for instruction.
