Week 9: Digital Citizenship

Week 9: My Data Mine

Reflection on information I found:

Google Search Information I was able to find with names/usernames first few pages:
  • I work at Waukegan High School as a teacher and my gmail is bgrenke@wps60.org
    • http://www.wps60.org/WHS/profile/3213-Briana-Grenke
  • I have an Esty Account that shows what wedding cake toppers I liked
    • https://www.etsy.com/people/soccerbriana12
  • I did a project for my undergrad Edu215 class where a peer and I had to create a webquest on Algebra 1 math topics (totally forgot about this!)
  • I have no rating on rate my professor and now people know I am a math teacher there
    • http://www.ratemyteachers.com/briana-r-grenke/5636277-t
  • I played soccer at Benedictine University & went to Glenbard East High School
  • My Soccer Profile

  • I am on Twitter (2 accounts). I made one for my undergraduate in which all I did was create the account and follow a few people and then never used it except when we did the Twitter chat the other week for this class so it doesn't give out too much information. My other account was created at a math department meeting were my department chair wanted us all to make one to use with each other, so I create an account, put up one picture and followed some of my coworkers and then never used it again so once again not a lot of information given out other than come of my coworkers and what my boyfriend (now fiance and soon to be husband) looks like.
  • I have an Instagram account that my cousin created for me to try and get me to use that I never use. She put up a picture of me holding a teddy bear (kinda embarasing) and posted that my nickname is Bri and that I love Jen, Skye and Rye which people probably wouldn't know are my cousin, fiance and dog. She followed a few people but I don't even know who because I don't even remember the login.
  • I have a meritpage.com profile that was apparently made by Benedictine University to show that I made the dean's list and that I was inducted into the Kappa Mu Epsilon National Math Honors Society.
  • I have a blog for this class which actually gives out quite a bit of information since we have been writing things every week about different topics and I have a nice introduction to me in week 1 that really tells people quite a lot about me including pictures.
  • I have a YouTube Account with nothing on it.
  • My soccer team participated in a fundraiser this year. So people can probably figure out I am a coach.

PeekYou/Intellious/Pipl/Spokeo Search:

https://www.spokeo.com/Briana-Grenke
http://www.peekyou.com/briana_grenke/32078949
https://www.intelius.com/people-search/Briana-R-Grenke/IL

  • My age of 25
  • My mom's full address in Lombard
  • That I use to have a MySpace and that is were that picture came from & the nickname the grenkster
  • My relatives Stephanie (ex sister-in-law), Chris (brother), Keith (Dad), Laura (Mom) & Tim (step-brother).
  • That I use to live in Brookfield,Il.
  • More relatives on Pipl (https://pipl.com/search/?t=MGYwOTQ1MzJkMzVlZjQxNjJjY2FjNGQxZjg3ZTBmNjFiZTk3YjBhYjk5ZjYwOTEz&in=8&q=Briana+Grenke&sloc=&l=&avatar=avatar-1)
  • Show that I have a Facebook on Pipl which that link and access probably give people the most information about me because I use it the most out of any other social media, but I also have quite of bit of privacy setting on so its not as easy to access information.
  • Spokeo shows them where my mom's house is in Lombard & that I am Caucasian if you couldn't figure it out from pictures.
I couldn't get Spezify.com, Illinois-teachers. findthedata. org or Personas.media.mit.edu to work for me so I don't know if I can be found on those sites.

My thoughts on all these findings are that I wasn't really surprised and I wasn't really scared by any of it. I am very aware that things that are brought up online stay for a long time and people can look up a lot of information on you. I was surprised that they were able to link me to my Brookfield house since I was very young when we lived there. I was also shocked that even though I took down my MySpace account that it was able to find the picture I had and made it the profile for the PeekYou account which was interesting. I also thought it is interesting that most of the information on me from Google is from Benedictine University through soccer or school achievements. I was surprised to find a few school projects that I did forever ago even thought I understand why they are still online.

Should this be taught to students?:

I think this skill should be taught to our students because it is important that they know the positive and negative affects of a digital tattoo. They should know that it can be harmful or helpful when they are trying to get accepted to college or looking for a job based on things they post that employers and schools can find on them. I also think it is important to help with the whole cyber-bullying, sexing and other mandated reporting issues that arise due to social media being used incorrectly and the fact that those pictures and information stay up there for a long time for people to access (especially if they have their privacy set to be open to everyone). I think the basics should be taught in elementary schools due to kids having phones and social media younger and younger these days. I think it would be important to be taught in school and by parents. It could just be a quick lesson every year or when examples come up to reinforce the issues and positives of a digital tattoo. I think this is something that should be really reinforced in middle school since this is when most students get cell phones/social media and that student in high school should be taught how it can affect college acceptance or future careers in good and bad ways.

Comments

  1. Could you imagine if every year starting in kindergarten every teacher spent a little bit of time on this? By time students got to you in high school hopefully they would have a digital dossier of sorts and an overall perception of how to be a good digital citizen.

It looks as if you uncovered quite a bit of information! Did you use any additional search engines besides Google?

  2. Briana,
I completely agree with you that students should learn about their digital tattoos at a young age. It won't be brought up to scare them, but to inform them that there is a lot of information out there that is public knowledge and it can have helpful or harmful affects based on your actions through digital sources and social media. Do you think that the way in which students approach online discussion tools and social media will be changed as a result of gaining this knowledge?

    1. I think (same as all lessons) that some students will take to it and other's will blow it off. I do think that students these days are more skeptical of technology so I think most will take it seriously. For example, many of my students put tape over there Chromebook cameras because they think we can watch them at home.

  3. From my high school perspective I'm finding it difficult to picture what a kindergarten lesson or first grade or second grade) would look like for content such as this. How would that go? Is the concept of a digital tattoo something they can wrap their heads around? (Genuinely asking. Absolutely no disrespect to the shorties!) Briana, you seemed to find so much more detailed information than I did. Did you pay to unlock one of the reports? It's so interesting how differently we're experiencing this assignment emotionally. I couldn't have been more anxious and really did not what to do it. I seriously considered asking for a pass or alternate assignment. In the end, even if I'm not glad I did it, it was useful.

    1. I'm not sure how those super young students would perceive a lesson on digital tattoos but it is amazing about how much they already know about technology at those ages! My nephew is in kindergarten and he know how to get to YouTube and play videos on my phone and my niece Kaylee always wants to see photos of her on my phone which are usually posted by their parents on social media so they do understand the basics. I did not pay to unlock any reports. I can see your anxiety about the assignment as it is personal and that doesn't always go well with all of us, but it is informative and gives you an idea of what people can find out about you!

  4. I too was somewhat reluctant to undertake this assignment. But it's probably better for me to know than not know. I agree with everyone that we need to teach our students about online resources and discuss their online presence. And Briana you found out a whole lot more about yourself than I did, probably because you have more social media accounts.
